Dwarf Spheroidals in MOND

چکیده

We take the line of sight velocity dispersions as functions of radius for 8 Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies and use Jeans analysis to calculate the mass-to-light ratios (M/L) in Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). Using the latest structural parameters, distances and variable velocity anisotropy, we find 6/8 dwarfs have sensible M/L using only the stellar populations. Sextans and Draco, however, have M/L=9.2 −3.0 and 43.9 −19.3 respectively, which poses a problem. Apart from the need for Sextans’ integrated magnitude to be reviewed, we propose tidal effects intrinsic to MOND, testable with numerical simulations, but fully orbit dependant, which are disrupting Draco. The creation of the Magellanic Stream is also re-addressed in MOND, the scenario being the stream is ram pressure stripped from the SMC as it crosses the LMC.

Understanding local Dwarf Spheroidals and their scaling relations under MOND

Aims. Using a specific form of the interpolation MOND function, we explore some of the consequences for dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Methods. The particular form of the interpolation function used, leads to a law of gravity which naturally accounts for Newtonian and MONDian phenomena. We show that this does not violate dynamical constraints at sub-galactic and solar system scales, does not degrad...

The Neutrino Hypothesis for Dark Matter in Dwarf Spheroidals

The theoretical expectation of the high mass of > 400 eV for the particles constituting the dark matter in dwarf-spheroidals as an artifact of the implicit assumption that the density of particles vanishes at the visible edge. On the contrary if our Galaxy and the dwarf-spheroidals are embedded in a neutrino condensation of the dimensions of the cluster then mv 10 eV can accommodate all the obs...

Are " Dwarf " Ellipticals Genuine Ellipticals?

We review the systematic properties of “dwarf” elliptical (dE) galaxies, focussing on the relation between “normal” and “dwarf” ellipticals. In recent years, this relation has been described as “dichotomy” – based essentially on a discontinuity in central surface brightness. We show that, outside of 300 pc from the centre, the Sérsic profile parameters vary continuously from “normal” to “dwarf”...

Possible evidence for MeV dark matter in dwarf spheroidals.

The observed 511 keV emission from the galactic bulge could be due to very light (MeV) annihilating dark matter particles. To distinguish this hypothesis from conventional astrophysical sources, we study dwarf spheroidals in the region observed by the International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory/SPI such as Sagittarius. As these galaxies have comparatively few stars, the prospects for 511 ke...

The counterparts of Local Group dwarf spheroidals in nearby clusters

In this contribution, we report on the discovery of dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) in the core of the Fornax cluster. Their photometric properties – like magnitude, colour, surface brightness – are very similar to those of Local Group dSphs. However, at a given total magnitude, dSphs in Fornax seem to be more extended than their Local Group counterparts. The membership of several dwarf galaxy candid...
